On land series

How people of the land can help save Bittern from extinction

Matuku-hurepo | Australasian Bittern are on the brink of extinction in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The people of the land are the ones who are our ears, our eyes and our voice for Bittern | Matuku-hurepo - you can HELP SAVE BITTERN FROM EXTINCTION and in doing so help other species reliant on fresh water - including us - as well.

RESOURCES   click the below links for information on making bittern friendly -

-DRAINS & WATERWAYS  (plus a how to guide here for drains)
-PONDS & POOLS
-WETLANDS

Our on land series aims to help people of the land to

Provide more food

Bittern feed in a range of habitats, including ditches beside roads and on land. One of the biggest gains in terms of increasing foraging habitat is through utilising & enhancing existing networks of on land drains.

By encouraging more eel and fish habitat on land and improving access for bittern we can provide safer, connected and more reliable feeding grounds.

Value Wetlands

Fencing off marginal boggy areas helps prevent loss of livestock, as well as time and resources.

Incorporating wetlands into drainage systems helps to slow the water down - protecting land from flooding; and will improve water quality, help sequester carbon and create biodiversity (including Bittern!) hotspots - all while still retaining or increasing the production values of the land.

Protect our future

Wetlands help protect our land from impacts of climate change.

Bittern are a flagship species for wetlands and waterways.. like the Kiwi is to our forests and wild corridors.. when we help Bittern we are helping all freshwater species to thrive... and we are looking after our freshwater for future generations of New Zealander’s to enjoy ‘drinkable’ ‘swimmable’ ‘fishable’ water.

What motivates us...

At the current rate of population decline, we are the last generation of people who can save Bittern in their natural wetland homes.

We can save Bittern if we ACT NOW .
